Dermal fillers & lip filler - FAQs
The experts at the Moon Aesthetics clinic have answered some of the most frequently asked questions that patients have about non-surgical lip injections & dermal filler treatments. Take a look at these questions and answers below.
How long does lip filler treatment take?
The time that it will take to complete your lip fillers will depend on various factors. For example, the amount of lip filler required. The more lip filler that you would like, the longer it may take. In general, the procedure usually takes around 5-30 minutes. The process is quick and easy.
Can you get lip fillers while pregnant?
It is not recommended to get this type of treatment when you are pregnant. Lip fillers have not been tested on pregnant women, and therefore the safety of the treatment is unknown. It is recommended by the NHS not to have muscle-relaxing treatments such as botox during pregnancy, which is why we do not advise having similar procedures carried out on pregnant women. This is also the case for new mums who are breastfeeding.
To be clear, Dermal fillers and other treatment options will not be available at our clinic if you are pregnant. We have other treatment options available that are more suitable, such as skin microneedling.
How to massage lip filler lumps?
Soft lumps under the skin of the treated area is common for all types of dermal filler treatment. If they are soft and are not hard and rubbery, they can be massaged so that they can flatten. Lumps after lip filler are usually just undissolved dermal fillers and, therefore, can just be dispersed. A firm massage on the soft lumps will boost plumping, help with smoothing out the skin and promote the best results possible.
Can you smoke after lip fillers?
Although it is best to avoid smoking straight after lip fillers as they should not be touched, after about 24 hours, it is perfectly okay to do so. Smoking 24 hours after lip fillers should not cause any harm or infections. If you have smoked soon after being treated and are seeing signs of infection, please contact your doctor immediately and keep the clinic fully informed until you make a full recovery.
How long does lip filler swelling last?
It is extremely common for the treated area to be swollen and experience redness after dermal fillers. The swollen area should go down after a few hours or by the next day. Following this, you may have some inflammation for a maximum of 2 weeks.
Bear in mind that the volume of treatment in your lip augmentation will impact the amount of inflammation that you may experience, with all side effects typically disappearing entirely after two weeks.
How to reduce swelling after lip augmentation?
There are various ways of reducing swelling after lip filler. The most common and easiest way is applying a cold compress to the area. This can relieve pain and reduce inflammation by a significant amount. Also, avoid sources of heat and exercise as this can drive blood to the injected area.
Can you drink alcohol after lip fillers?
Consuming alcohol after lip fillers should be avoided for 24 hours as the area is extremely sensitive. After 24 hours, it is entirely safe to consume alcohol. However, be aware that alcohol thins the blood and result in an increase in size of the swollen area and bruising of the lips. If this is okay with you, feel free to have a drink!
Can you eat after lip fillers?
It is perfectly safe to eat after lip fillers as long as numbing cream has not been applied. If numbing cream has been applied, it is advised to wait until the cream has worn off as it can be dangerous to eat with numb lips. It may cause you to choke. Easy foods are recommended, such as ice cream. Ice cream can also soothe the lips.
